Black Is Beautiful: Recent Gifts From Black Art In America and Najee & Seteria Dorsey
DECEMBER 18, 2021 - APRIL 10, 2022
In late 2020, Black Art in America (BAIA) and Seteria and Najee Dorsey presented The Columbus Museum with a donation of fifteen objects in various media by fifteen different African American artists. The gift aligns with the Museum’s recent efforts to diversify its permanent collection; the generous gift is also part of BAIA’s ongoing effort to ensure that the works of African American artists are represented in the nation’s public collecting institutions. An array of prominent master and contemporary African American artists created the compelling works in the grouping. The gift strengthens the Museum’s holdings of several artists, like David Driskell and Richard Hunt. In other cases, the donation provides the Museum’s first example by legends like Elizabeth Catlett and Kerry James Marshall. Taken as a whole, the exhibition provides an important glimpse into 20th- and 21st-century styles, subject matter, and materials.
This exhibition is generously sponsored by AFLAC.
